If a lock sticks, spins, or has quit on you, we repair it when that makes sense and replace it when it does not.
How do I know my lock is going bad?
- You have to pull or push the door before the key will turn.
- The cylinder turns with the key.
- The knob feels loose or droops.
- The latch no longer catches the strike.
- The key goes in only partway.
Repair or replace?
Plenty of old mortise lock trouble comes from a worn part or a door that has dropped, and both can be fixed. When the case itself is broken, a new lock is the better answer. We tell you which it is and put both choices in writing when you have a choice.
Will a new lock fit my old door?
Usually, yes. We match the opening so the new lock sits where the old one did. If the old plate was bigger, you may see a faint outline in the paint around the new one.
What happens on the job?
Your call and your photo tell us which parts to bring. When we get to the door, we point out what is worn or broken and tell you what we plan to do. Then we do the work and try every lock and key with you before we pack up.
Questions we get
Can you fix a key stuck in the lock?
Yes. We take out the broken piece and check the cylinder. Often we can cut you a new key at our shop.
Do you carry parts for old locks?
We carry common parts. For an unusual lock, send a photo first so we can look for the part.
What if the door is the real problem?
We look at that first. A door that has sagged can make a good lock act broken, and we can adjust it.
